Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 143 is better than Parent Visa Subclass 103?

Contributory Parent Visa

CONTRIBUTORY PARENT VISA – SUBCLASS 143

Contributory Parent visa – Subclass 143 lets parents of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia permanently.

Key Points:

With this Contributory Parent visa – Subclass 143, you can:

  • stay in Australia indefinitely
  • work and study in Australia
  • enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses
  • sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
  • travel to and from Australia for five years
  • apply for Australian citizenship (once residence requirements have been met)

Contributory Parent visa – Subclass 143 vs. Parent visa (subclass 103)

Contributory Parent visa and Parent visa have similar eligibility requirements for applicants, but there are significant differences in processing time and associated application charges and other costs.

Parent visa (subclass 103) can take up to 30 years to be finalised, while most of subclass 143 visas take more than 4 years to be granted. The reason being, in the parent visa category, subclass 143 visa applications are given priority in processing comparing to other parent visas.

On the cost side, a Contributory Parent visa costs significantly more than a Parent visa. The first visa instalment is due at the time of application, amounting to $4155 for a single applicant. The second instalment of $43,600 is due before the visa grant.

A Contributory Parent visa applicant must also obtain assurance of support before the visa is granted. The guaranteed amount should be carried out for a period of 10 years.

Contributory Parent visa – Subclass 143: Eligibility criteria

To be an eligible candidate for a Subclass 143 visa, the applicant must have a child, who is a settled Australian citizen, a permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen, as the sponsor. The child is considered “settled” when he/she has been living in Australia for more than 2 years.

Moreover, the applicant must satisfy the “balance of family test”. This means that the applicant should have at least half of his/her children live permanently in Australia, or more children should live permanently in Australia than in any one other country.

The applicant should also be able to satisfy health and character requirements.

Contributory Parent visa – Subclass 143: Assurance of Support (AOS)

Once the Contributory Parent visa – subclass 143 visa is granted, the applicant will not be entitled to any social security payments from the Australian government for a period of 10 years. As a result, to cover potential social security outgoings, a Contributory Parent visa applicant must obtain assurance of support before the visa is granted,

The assurer, being an Australian resident or organisation, has to give a bank guarantee for 10 years through the Commonwealth Bank to the Department of Human Services.

Further information on the assurance of support are given in the Department of Human Services website: https://www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/assurance-support
