Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300)

With this visa, you can
  • stay in Australia for up to 9 months from date of grant of visa
  • work in Australia
  • study in Australia at your own expense
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want


Partner visa

If the prospective marriage visa was granted and you and your spouse want to settle in Australia, apply for a Partner visa (subclass 820 and 801):

You will pay less for the Partner visa if you apply for it while your Prospective Marriage visa is still valid.


Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300): How long you can stay

This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for up to 9 months from the date of the visa grant.  The prospective marriage visa (Subclass 300) period starts on the date it is granted.

Include family

You can:

  • You can include members of the family unit in your application when you apply
  • add family members to your application after you apply but before a decision is made on your application

Family members who apply for the visa must meet health and character requirements.

Family members who are not coming to Australia might also have to meet health requirement.

Newborn children

Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300): Cost

The prospective marriage visa (Subclass 300) costs AUD7715 for the main applicant.

There is also a fee for each family member who applies for the visa with you.

You might also have to pay other costs for health checks, police certificates, and biometrics.

You will also pay a fee for your Partner visa. You pay less for this visa if you marry your prospective spouse and apply for the Partner visa before your Prospective Marriage visa ends.


Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300): Apply from

You must be outside Australia when you apply and when your application is decided.


Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300): Processing times
  • 75% of applications in 15 months
  • 90% of applications in 19 months

Your application might take longer to process if:

  • you do not fill it in correctly
  • you do not include all the documents

You and your family members must meet all visa conditions and obey Australian laws.

Your marriage

You must enter Australia on the Prospective Marriage visa before the date specified on your grant letter.

You must have married your prospective spouse before your Prospective Marriage visa expires.

You can get married in Australia or any other country. Your marriage must be valid under Australian law.

Health insurance

You are personally liable for all your healthcare costs while you are in Australia. Insurance can help limit your financial liability.

You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want while the visa is valid.

New Zealand passport holders

New Zealand passport holders should tell the immigration officer at the border that they have a Prospective Marriage visa. If you do not tell them, you might be granted a Special Category visa (subclass 444). Grant of a subclass 444 visa will cease your Prospective Marriage visa.

Visa label

The visa will be digitally linked to your passport. You will not get a label in your passport.


Have a sponsor

You and anyone who applies for the visa with you must be sponsored by your prospective spouse.

The Department of Home Affairs must approve the sponsorship.


Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300): Be the right age

You must be 18 years old or older when you apply for the visa.

Meet health requirement

You and any family members who apply for the visa with you must meet health requirement.

Family members who are not coming to Australia might also have to meet health requirement.

Meet character requirement

You and any family members (including those who don’t apply for the visa with you) must meet character requirement.


Pay your debts to the Australian government

If you or any family members (including those who don’t apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.


Not had a visa cancelled or an application refused

You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia. Check if visa cancellation affects your eligibility.
